SHOW NOTES
Each look embodies a resilient character. The Fletcher woman carries the grace and power of the Northumberland landscape, akin to a stag in a clearing or a mythical portrayal of Mother Nature’s daughters. The initial darker palette, symbolising the challenges faced by Fletcher launching in the North, features heavy iron branches and knots that wrap around the body, a visual representation of weight and restraint. The entirely beaded garments, solid and heavy like armour, stand as a symbol of resilience, ready to face the elements and endure the test of time.
The changing seasons are reflected in the colours of each look, from the heather-covered September moors to the bronze ferns of autumn, the burnt sunsets over the Cheviot hills, and the grey seas mirroring an overcast sky. As the palette lightens, the garments flow, symbolising the freedom and growth of the strong female form, growing to a moment of blossoming under pressure.
Prominent silhouettes are re-imagined with new textiles and composition, including volumes of chiffon returning with a focus on print and their soft interaction with the harshness of their iron structures. Elongated proportions play into the alienated interpretation of these characters, producing an other-worldly appearance alongside delicately shaped headpieces that appear one with the form.
The production of HOME GROUND has been a beautiful collaborative effort, with local artists playing an essential role. The collection’s message is strengthened as multiple northern creatives, each with their unique love for the area, contribute to the narrative. The skilful craft of Ashlee Donaldson and Stephen Lunn, in particular, has been integral. Their traditional blacksmithing techniques have been integrated into the garments, forging wrought iron into alienated forms of flora and ropes that cling to the body. Styled alongside Daisy Grice’s unique jewellery structures cast in sterling silver, the longevity of the landscape and the body have been captured.
Commemorating Fletcher’s most beloved locations, artist Liz Newton produced striking ink illustrations that have been applied to a print likening a Toile de Jouy – now Toile de Northumberland. ‘The Northumberland Milliner’ Margaret Woodliff Wright lends her talents to creating horn-like halo headpieces that draw on multiple paths of the concept.
Alnwick Castle is the most impactful example of medieval architecture within Northumberland’s iconography. Presenting within its walls enhances the context of the collection by proving that craftsmanship and care can make things last. The designer grew up passing this castle every day, making for a memorable and full-circle moment, truly making it the perfect location. With the expressive voices of the choir and the stirring pieces chosen, Fletcher’s love letter to her home is sealed.
This collection will shout with pride from the North by prioritising the pure joy of creativity and connection.
We’re stronger on home ground.
