Meg Fletcher
Fashion & Textile Artist
Based in Northumberland England, I began my namesake label after graduating in 2023. I focus on creating wearable pieces of art that span multiple disciplines and mediums.
Within my work, there's a strong flow of narratives and characters derived from a childhood in theatre. It's no surprise I have a love for costume and the transformative powers it holds. I believe in creating garments that give the wearer new energy to become what the garment wants them to be. For a garment to hold its entity when not being worn is something I strive for.
During high school, my multi-media focus formed with an appreciation for history, physics, music, theatre and textiles. Whilst my strengths lie in the arts, I continue to explore the topics I find challenging by realising them into design concepts. I've also recognised the potential in exploring the subject of 'self', using my disciplines as an active form of therapy for my current challenges.
When it came down to it, I wasn't personally ready to move to London for a degree in Fashion. At the time, I believed a UAL degree was the main path to success. However, after a foundation at Newcastle College and a year out, I found the culture at Northumbria University to be my perfect mix of comfort and challenges. During a London-based placement in 2021, I finally accepted that my creativity doesn't flourish inside the noise of the city. Though its' concentrated level of inspiration and opportunities are unmatched, the mindful space that being home in Northumberland provides allows me to thrive. I don't know who that version of me would be had I moved away, but presenting my first complete collection here today, I couldn't be happier with my choices.
I have never taken an interest in aligning collections with a season, and the idea of rushing the process to produce 2 or 4 collections a year to feed relevancy sounds draining on one's imagination. To eliminate overproduction, I focus on a slow & meaningful approach where every piece exists to tell an integral part of the narrative. Nothing brings me more joy than spending many, many hours on a garment that slowly comes into existence with the skill of my own two hands. It gets more special that way. Ensuring its impact endures the changing seasons and trends. A piece of my heart envisioned in cloth.
I hope to bring joy.
I hope to make others feel special.
